This works perfectly well as a multimeter. And for the price of this, it compares well with a $70 meter that I have. All the functions of a meter it does really well. The issues happen when you get into the scope and signal generator.
The signal generator offers all these various wav forms. No matter what I do or choose, I can only ever select the square wav (I believe there are around 12 wavs to choose from). The signal generator doesn't seem to be all that functional and the manual doesn't give any instructions on how to use the signal generator. Actually, the manual doesn't give any instructions...it just tells you what the name of each part of the meter, scope, and signal generator are.
I was eventually able to calibrate one of my passive scope probes that came with the kit. The blade of the screwdriver that came with the meter for adjusting the calibration screw has a really flimsy blade. One probe calibrates and the other probe does not calibrate. Fortunately, the probe that does not calibrate is well calibrated; however, I would prefer having a completely functional component with the product that I purchased.
You can certainly use the scope to take measurements. Be very aware that, once you start using the scope, your battery will drain at such a high rate of speed that you will be lucky to have 10 minutes of use out of it before the battery dies. The cable that comes with the kit for charging and upgrading the firmware is about 5" long. If you find another cable that has some real length to it, keep the scope plugged in and charging while you use it or it will die in the middle of taking measurements.
I've tried contacting fNIRSI numerous times. They never reply or respond. The product's concept is cool but, being someone who knows this little about oscilloscopes and I can immediately find this many issues with one should tell you that there are better options out there.
So why did I give this three stars? The multimeter. It's a fantastic multimeter and the meter's probes are wonderful. It seems like fNIRSI really designed a multimeter and then added a scope and a signal generator on after the fact. The multimeter is wonderful and takes accurate measurements. It's not all bad. I wish the company would actually respond when you click the chat option on the website.
I have one other product coming from them that I ordered. I hope it provides better results. I'll keep playing with the scope and signal generator and see if I can figure out how to get them functioning. Beyond that, I would look for a better option, if you want a signal generator or scope. The multimeter is fantastic.
